Canadian Rheumatology Association Meeting
February 2023
CATA took advantage of this first nationwide in-person arthritis meeting since early 2020 to connect with stakeholders, drive awareness about CATA, and bring more trainees into the organisation.
Represented in-person by Keith (External Affairs) and Yvonne (Vice Chair and Internal Affairs), who manned a booth next to Arthritis Society Canada, meeting with trainees, investigators, and partner organisations
Trainees who stopped by were entered into a draw to win a $100 gift card

Presentation Preparation Workshop
Wednesday January 25th, 2023
This second-annual online session was targeted towards trainees with poster or oral presentations at the upcoming Canadian Arthritis Research Conference (CARC), Research Presentation Days, or Canadian Rheumatology Association meetings or other forums.
Facilitated by CATA Leaders and two experienced patient-partners, trainees from across the country received tips on designing an effective poster or talk for scientific and consumer audiences alike and dealing with nerves.
Participants provided feedback on each others’ drafts in small groups
The patient-partners also provided tips on navigating the poster session and respectful interactions with patient/consumer audiences.
Career Transitions Panel

CATA hosted an online panel and Q&A session with two former Arthritis Society Canada-funded trainees, Drs. Amanda Ali and Jasmin Ma, both of whom recently made the transition to independent investigator.
Before taking up her faculty position, Jasmin was also CATA’s Brand Management officer!
They discussed their training pathways in arthritis research and the importance of collaborating across disciplines and with different stakeholders, including patient partners

Trainee Networking Room, Canadian Arthritis Research Conference
February 7 & 8th, 2022
Together with Kyle Vader, trainee member of the CARC Scientific Planning Committee, CATA Executives led online trainee networking sessions
Trainees had the chance to unwind after the day’s research presentations and chat in a non-intimidating setting.
Session was attended by trainees from Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec, and covered topics including how much time to leave between one’s Master’s and Ph.D. program, and considerations for choosing a postdoctoral fellowship or employment position after Ph.D.
Poster Preparation Workshop

Facilitated by CATA Leaders and two experienced patient-partners, trainees received tips on designing an effective poster or talk for scientific and consumer audiences alike, and provided feedback on each others’ drafts.
Elevator Pitch Workshop
September 27, 2021
During this online workshop, trainees learned how to learn to effectively pitch their research to a non-scientific audience while connecting with experienced patient-partners.
At the end of the session, trainees pitched to the large group, with the three patient-partners serving as judges and deciding on the winning pitch.
